What is Trauma?

Trauma is the emotional, psychological, and physical response to experiences that overwhelm a person’s ability to cope. This can include events such as abuse, neglect, loss, violence, accidents, medical trauma, chronic stress, or relational wounds. Trauma does not only live in memories. It can also affect the nervous system, the body, emotions, relationships, and a person’s sense of safety in the world. Many people experience symptoms such as anxiety, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, panic, difficulty trusting others, intrusive thoughts, chronic stress, sleep disturbances, or feeling “stuck” in survival mode.
